Two examples of engagement of the target group using photography.
1. Vice asked refugees living in a refugee center in Berlin to document their lives during one week using disposable photo cameras. It resulted in a surprising, unconventional photo series, posted on Vice’s website (text in Dutch).

2. Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen handed out 10 compact photo cameras to underage young people in Nairobi’s Kamiti prison, allegedly the biggest prison in Africa. After a training by Kadir they started capturing moments in their lives behind bars. By doing this, the prisoners and the photojournalist collaborate on the photo project called ‘Young in prison’ (article in Dutch, published in Dutch magazine ‘Vrij Nederland’).

The photo essay might show the loneliness when visiting some parts of this planet. Tourism mostly shows quite the contrary. People seem to travel far, but socially their range is not that extensive as they think.

Long term photo project Urban Quilombo by Sebastian Liste

Photojournalists take you to places you cannot easily access yourself. A great example of this asset of photojournalism is Sebastian Liste’s series of the families living in “Galpao da Araujo Barreto”, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
This long term photo project called Urban Quilombo started in 2009 and shows the new society inhabitants of the factory have created. And the emotions, dynamics and problems that come with it. The series greatly displays both of Sebastian’s roles; the sociologist and the photographer.
