Project info: At a young age Ashley ended up on the street at a young age. In a podcast, made by journalism students, the Dutch woman explains the impact of being homeless and stereotypes and stigmas she had to deal with.

For Het Beelddepot – The Image Depot – I revisited Ashley to talk about the the past and the steps she took to get out of her dire situation and created an animated audio slideshow on the past and present.

Multimedia project on the energy transition for Enpuls

Interactive multimedia production for the green think tank Enpuls


Project info: The multimedia project ‘Our New Energy’ highlights the energy transition in five countries. The international interactive story was made for the Dutch green think tank Enpuls.

In the multimedia project international journalists, experts, entrepreneurs, activists and researchers have their say on climate change and the energy transition in Japan, Nigeria, China, Sweden and Hawai’i.

The project had been published on the interactive Slices tool.

Interactive video tool for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs


Project info: In order to pay tribute to the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked me to come up with an idea to create a more compelling piece than the usual video compilation of short statements by MoFA colleagues.

I developed the concept for this interactive, mobile-first video publication, using the Slices-tool.

I remotely briefed MoFa colleagues in the field to have their portrait taken on the streets and record a few audio statements about what it means for them to commemorate IDAHOT 2019.

The production is shared in the countries the ministry is active.

Audio photo slideshow of Amsterdam ferry men

Project info: No less that 80 times Amsterdam ferrymen and women go up and down the IJ canal each shift. Each day, each week. 80 times the same 5 minute passage. 40 times a view on the same quay.

A few meters above the passenger deck, the ferry captains look down on the cargo disembarking their vessel. A couple of minutes when docked allow for a moment of woolgathering.

When the buzzer sounds, the mesmerizing is over and a new crossing is about to begin.

Chaptered life story – an interactive multimedia longscroll

Interactive/multimedia longread ‘Denish’


Project info: This impressive life story is told by Denish, former child soldier from Uganda. The kind of story you find in an evil children’s book. Non-fiction, that is.
 
This multimedia production has been made in close cooperation with War Child Holland. This Dutch NGO provides psychosocial support to children affected by armed conflict. Denish has been a child soldier in the civil war in Northern Uganda. He was forced to join the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in their fight for control over the Northern part of the African country.
 
Denish’ interview was done February 2017. In 2017 War Child Holland closed the programme in Uganda after being active in the country for 12 years.

A showcase website using 360 imagery


Project info: This 360 website is made for the Nimbin-project of Fontys University of Journalism. The project is based on the principle of ‘Education Without Walls’. By applying 360 technology in the user experience, visitors experience the principle of looking around. Navigation without walls. Exactly how students operate in the project. They go outside of the school building to explore the worlds of art, design, anthropology, sociology and philosophy.

Interactive timeline 12 Years War Child in Uganda

Creating interactive timeline War Child Holland

Project info: War Child Holland wanted to publish the highlights of 12 years of its activities in Northern Uganda. I created an online interactive timeline allowing the visitor to go through these highlights in its own pace. By using KnightLab’s timeline tool we created a multimedia timeline, including video, photography, data visualisation and text. The timeline is part of War Child’s online annual report 2016.

Project info: This multimedia longscroll tells the story of Clare, an LGBT activist from Uganda. The story combines video, photography, audio and text. I followed Clare for one week during Amsterdam Gay Pride 2014. And during the week, I found out that homophobia by peers was not the only challenge Clare faces.

How I Surf – interactive photo series

Project info: How do you surf? That’s the question RNW put to young people from Cuba to China, Nigeria to South Sudan. RNWs interactive photo series ‘How I Surf’ portrays young netizens in their natural surfing habitat. The goal of the project was to allow RNW’s young target groups to allow for comparison between the issues they encounter when surfing the web in their countries, like blockades, low bandwith and censorship.

But ‘How I Surf’ also reveals how the web helps them in their daily lives, the stuff they buy online and the social media channels they prefer. It makes use of the interactive photo app ‘ThingLink’.
