Simple and superb example of smart OSINT meeting straightforward UX by Airwars. It claims to be the largest analysis of air strikes by Israeli forces on Gaza from October 7th to November 7th 2024. Scroll down the Strip and find out where air strikes took place and what they looked like.



For more context and data – many reports of civilians being killed – Airwars links to ‘full incident reports’. It’s dark, it’s unpolished, in black and white and orange, probably referring to the color of flares used in combat.

Very well designed visual research project on ‘borders’ by visual researcher and photographer Simone Wenth. The basic (and old school) UX and graphic design of the website leads the viewer through the project that consist of traditional photography, Google Earth videos, posters and a graphic novel.

And yes, the private folder really is private.



Winner of the 3rd prize of the storytelling category at the Zilveren Camera 2024.

Textbook example of how to use citizen journalism for fact checking purposes. From the heart of war-torn Mariupol, Ukraine, locals show and tell the stories of the destruction of their city.


TikTok offers the viewer a non-edited insight in the life under occupation and conflict. The seemingly casually shot videos are a great and real-life addition to the interviews with residents of Mariupol. ‘We are still alive’ is a well composed multimedia longscroll story giving you an in-your-face check on the ground.

When it comes to (frequent flyer) miles we might think we been traveling a long way. But socially, the journeys we make hardly cross any borders. No more loneliness in most parts of our planet. We go where everyone goes.

When more and more travel pictures are shared via social media, this phenomenon seems to increase. Symbolised by the ironic and alarming symbol of the social media queue.

Belgian photographer Natacha de Mahieu makes a critical series on mass tourism. Via geolocation she finds the mosts visited tourist spots (or traps) and makes collages of visitors. Would it be stronger if it wasn’t cut and pasted in Photoshop? Probably. Does it do the job anyhow? By showing us how we have become traveling lemmings? It sure does.

The series thoughtfully combines fun and misery, meticulously composed shots and in-your-face blown-out snaps. Just a project to adore.

This is what full screen, immersive stories should look like. A NYT production that takes you straight into the (snowboarding) action, thanks to great cinematography (by Emily Rhyne, Noah Throop, Nick Waggoner).

The angle? What fear does to a snowboard or skiing athlete. Well told in action shots, interview and background info. Enter cmd-F territory.

How real the fear can get and how things can go seriously wrong, comes together in ‘The Crash Reel’, an amazing film on the recovery of snowboarder Kevin Pearce, main competitor of Olympic champion Shaun White.

Up close and personal travel story of young (very young) refugees trying to enter Europe. This transmedia project uses feature film, photography, video portraits and a game to experience the many difficulties Jano, Shiro, SK and other young boys have to overcome to reach a European country.


By framing it as a game – the truck game, the train game, the walking game – they somehow cope with the tension and stress their flight causes. Reality shows it’s by no means a video game you can turn off when you’re fed up. Lives are at stake.

Video letter to community fridges in NYC

A charming initiative depicted in an appealing video (love) letter. Dutch film-maker Ilja Willems tells us the story of the community fridges in New York City.


In the short film made for Dutch broadcaster Human and 2doc we see colourful fridges in NYC boroughs, which are filled and emptied by community members. People who have some extra and people who are in need of food. Each fridge is small art work to itself (very Instagrammable too). nycfridge.com has a current fridge count of 146.


Film-makers Willems not only interviews the ‘fridge managers’ but also their client who regularly make use of the free food. Photogenic street scenes of the Big Apple complete the picture.

When Covid stimulates creativity. Dutch photographer and artist Jitske Schols made portraits of students who studied abroad, but were forced to return home. Remotely, with FaceTime. She directed and coached her subjects and made the portraits with a simple screen shot.

The series won the second prize in the ‘portraits’ category at the Zilveren Camera photo competition.

Land doesn't vote, people do election animation by Karim Douieb

Simple, yet functional, great looking (and viral on Twitter) data visualisation of the 2016 election result, made by Belgium dataviz specialist Karim Douïeb. It underpins the misrepresentation of Republican votes in most election maps. “A visual error” says Douieb to Belgium newspaper ‘De Morgen’.


The visual error comes down to the fact that Trump-voters mostly live in large, but sparsely populated areas. The areas Democratic voters live in are geographically smaller but densely populated. Hence, in most election maps the Republican votes are visually overrepresented since states are ‘filled’ with one color. Brilliant.

Okay, we saw a few of these before. Using Google street view to create art photography was done by Michael Wolf, Jacqui Kenny and others. From 2008, Jon Rafman started spending hours and hours navigating the streets of the world to do the same: finding awkward scenes that evoke questions.



The body of work called Nine Eyes of Google Street View referring to the nine lenses of the camera Google uses, is now online at the gallery website of Sprueth Magers. Freezing daily street life leads to interesting stills, challenging the viewer to imagine what has happened. In his endless search Rafman even found a broken down Google street view car. Finally, a photographer that does not use flash to create the overexposed, blown out look that’s filling the magazines and Instagram feeds today. New York based photographer John Taggart creates a spherical photo report on the Weinstein rape trial with explicit flash. According to the article on Time.com by using an on and off camera flash.


Looking at Taggarts portfolio, this flash method is not his trademark. But by subject choice and creative flash technique, Taggart creates an outstanding, non conventional mood. His work on the Weinstein trial has been published on, amongst others, Time’s Instagram account.

Time Magazine too brings an overview of ‘the best of 2019’. Their ‘Best photojournalism of 2019’ opens with a striking shot of their Person of the Year, Greta Thunberg. Watching the wall of lenses waiting at the train door she’s about to exit, you almost starting to feel sorry for her. At the same time, exposure is what she’s after. Crucial for her master plan to save the planet. Best wishes, Greta.

When scrolling down ‘Best photojournalism of 2019’ you stumble upon key shots of various photo stories, reportages and portraits selected by the Time Photo Department. Check the hyperlinks in the intro text to see the full stories. Plus one for Matthieu Paley’s work in Jacobabad, Pakistan, where temperatures reached more than 50 degrees (Celsius, that is) making it one of the hottest places in the world. Paley’s project nicely mixes reportage and street portraits.

Mobile first, in a very straightforward sense. In the YouTube series #tagged all stories are told via the screens of mobile phones and the usage of popular apps.

Yes, every episode of around 10 mins only features a mobile phone. #tagged is made by Dutch broadcaster KRO-NCRV, but is a web only series. On December 2, 2019 #tagged won the Rose d’Or Award, an international awards festival in entertainment broadcasting and programming.

Another magnificent Op-Doc, by New York Times. The well crafted online video series by the American news organisation. ‘Mumbai’s Midnight Gardeners’ features two night workers; Rajesh and Ganesh. They water the many plants of the Indian capital. At night. When the city sleeps but a working day for these men is in full effect.

In (and on top of) their water truck they disclose their life stories. Love life, the Indian cast system, daily struggles, everything comes to light.

Documentary filmmaker Divya Pathak creates an intimate, beautifully shot and color graded video portrait. The empty the streets of the night, in stark contrast to the day, the amazing soundscapes, the charming main characters, it all adds up to another exquisite Op-Doc.

Corporate journalism RATP by Bruce Gilden

While preparing for a lecture on visual corporate storytelling, I found this magnificent example of making use of the talent and quality of photojournalists to tell a corporate story. Okay, it’s a bit old, but in 2016 the French public transport organization Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP) commissioned Magnum photographer (and personal street photography hero) Bruce Gilden to document travellers, commuters and other users of public transport in Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Manchester, New York and Paris. In his own personal, striking, relentless style.

Respect to RATP for this somewhat courageous undertaking. The images ended up in a book (see link below) and were exhibited in 16 subway stations in Paris. Would have loved seeing that.

In-game photography by Alan Butler

So there’s photography. And there’s in-game photography. Until recently it was an unknown genre to me. At a talk of a photo curator of the FOAM photography museum in Amsterdam the name Alan Butler came up. His work is pretty amazing. Instead of stealing cars and raping women, Butler takes up the role of photojournalist in Grand Theft Auto, the game.

Butler uses the photographic conventions of a typical photojournalists. There’s one thing he doesn’t use, physically that is, which is a camera. Despite, he is capable of creating a photographic reportage of poverty and the poor, who are programmed in the game. ‘Down and Out in Los Santos’ is an alienating experience.


Down and Out in Los Santos is series of photographs that are created by exploiting a smartphone camera feature within the video game Grand Theft Auto V by Alan Butler

Climbing El Capitan without ropes. But with a 360 view.

Watching this on a cinema screen was mind-blowing, nerve-wrecking, exhausting, and so on. Watching Alex Honnold free soloing El Capitan in 360 creates a new dimension to this story. Vertigo galore. Excellent video production by National Geography following the world’s most famous solo climber (yes, that means no ropes) on his way to the top of El Cap. Doing the virtually impossible.

Spoiler alert: he makes it alive and well. By using 360 technology NG let’s you somehow experience it in a very immersive manner. For the obvious reasons the production won a Webby Award. Check the video below. But don’t look down too much.

Striking, disturbing video story ‘In The Absence’

How terribly wrong is this. The Korean Sewol ferry, with 476 people on board, mostly secondary school children, is sinking and officials order rescue staff to put up a show. Which power structures, political games and personal interests disrupted a safe and acceptable aftermath of this tragedy? In the end 299 passengers died, as wel as 2 rescue divers. How terribly wrong.

Okay, that was the personal disbelieve and outrage.



‘In the Absence’ is a very well made piece of online video (could have been television too, by the way), done by director Yi Seung-Jun. The film uses footage shot by passengers in the vessel, audio clips of the communications between officials and rescue workers and impressive personal testimonials of parents of the perished passengers. The video was nominated for ‘best online video’ by World Press Photo 2019.

Hurricane Florence was about to hit the United States. The Weather Channel created this production using augmented reality (AR) to show the potential consequences, the storm surge, of the hurricane. The presenter in the studio is surrounded by rising water levels explaining what the possible scenarios are and what the situation might look like in the coming hours. Smart, spot on, innovative, well done.

Incredible interactive production by The Pudding, a Brooklyn based “digital publication that explains ideas debated in culture with visual essays”. ‘The Language of Hip Hop’ explores the usage of words in lyrics. Basis for the visual representation of this search are the 26 million words from the lyrics of the top 500 charting artists on Billboard’s Rap Chart (about 50,000 songs), as stated by The Pudding. Scroll through this unique piece of data visualisation meets cultural storytelling. That makes the heart of this hip hop lover and cultural sociologist jump. Big up.

Two examples of engagement of the target group using photography.
1. Vice asked refugees living in a refugee center in Berlin to document their lives during one week using disposable photo cameras. It resulted in a surprising, unconventional photo series, posted on Vice’s website (text in Dutch).

2. Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen handed out 10 compact photo cameras to underage young people in Nairobi’s Kamiti prison, allegedly the biggest prison in Africa. After a training by Kadir they started capturing moments in their lives behind bars. By doing this, the prisoners and the photojournalist collaborate on the photo project called ‘Young in prison’ (article in Dutch, published in Dutch magazine ‘Vrij Nederland’).

In Olysymphony the New York Times present final results of winter games by using audio signals. Play the results and discover the minimal differences between the participants of skying, bobsled and speed skating. Fractions of a second, indeed. This is media-free thinking in it’s purest form. Just gold.

Photojournalists take you to places you cannot easily access yourself. A great example of this asset of photojournalism is Sebastian Liste’s series of the families living in “Galpao da Araujo Barreto”, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.

This long term photo project called Urban Quilombo started in 2009 and shows the new society inhabitants of the factory have created. And the emotions, dynamics and problems that come with it. The series greatly displays both of Sebastian’s roles; the sociologist and the photographer.

Various sport events at the Rio 2016 Olympics are shot frame by frame in order to create Cartier-Bressoneske like visualisations.
